i tried playing a cd and my computer wouldn't read it.
After looking through my computer I realized that since I updated to windows 7, i no longer have a cd-rom drive.
i still have the dvd drive but not the cd.
how can i fix this?

Original title: Mid April Windows Update appears to cause gui components of various apps to break eg Event Viewer, Media Center
After the most recent round of Windows Updates (mid April) various apps have stopped working.
When I tried to use the Event Viewer to see what was going on,
I got the message "MMC could not create snap-in"

Is anyone else seeing this ??

Other affected apps are Media Center,
and Third party stuff like the intel RAID management console (iaStor)
and the parameter config app for the desktop utility Fences
all fail to work anymore - any suggestions for a fix ??

I tried system restore to back out the windows updates, but no help.

I am looking for some advice please.
I have tried in the past both with Vista and my current system to back up my computer to an external drive.
I have been reasonably successful but today I decided to do things differently by making my own choice and decided
to choose to back up my "C" Drive instead of the default choice.
I was hoping to save space on my external drive but the amount of space to be saved was determined as 183Gb?
I'm a bit confused as my computer itself has only about 140Gb's of space of which 90 odd has been taken up.
It appears that the back up was doubling up? All I really want to back up is my personal items such as documents, that would save a lot of space,
but would that be a sensible thing to do? I already back up my pictures separately and if the worst happened and my computer crashed I would be happy to reinstall Windows and restore the items I just mentioned.
If you have time would you care to explain, in simple terms, why the destination folder on my external drive is always marked as empty, after a back up, when you hover the pointer over it? Then when you go to delete it, it's too big for the recycle bin!

I am not really sure why your external drive shows empty. However, I backup to D drive on my computer and the system image shows 0 bytes. That is just how it works.

It sounds like you have backed up two system images rather than an incremental one to your external drive.

You could reformat your external drive that would delete everything on it, and start again.

If all you want is to keep your documents etc, safe you can just copy them across to your external drive.
