backup old to new drive

I did a complete install on the new hard drive and then did a restore from the backup file.  now I have to sets of files in documents and settings one set (new) with orignal names and 1 with name.windows and original.computer name.  It's using the the new
files how can get it back to old files and settings?
I replaced a hard drive  Backed up first install windows on the new drive and then a restore.  I tried a couple of sofrtware  programs and they would work properly.  Also what is the best way to change hardrives and keep original files and settings

If you failed to fix it, another option is to call Microsoft and walk through the process with a technician. To do this, dial "1-800-936-5700". Explain the error that you received and the steps in the update process during which it was displayed.
