Can't alter properties for bookmarks - 'An error has occurred when writing the property...'
When I try to edit details for bookmarks, either from within IE8 or when an HTML shortcut is on the desktop, inside a folder, etc, I am presented with 'An error has occurred when writing the property...'.
Example:
Create a shortcut to a website on the desktop. Right click on the shortcut, go to the Details tab, and try to enter a description. The resulting error message is 'An error occurred when writing the property 'Description' to the file...'. This happens to
the rating, description, and notes fields.

FWIW I think you missed the point of your last responder there. They rename a Favorite via right-click. That's a .URL file so they were changing its Properties.
In Vista much to my surprise this works. Who knew? ; ) I'll try to remember to test it on W7 too.
E.g.
after my changes I dragged the Favorite to an open Notepad window and saw new lines at the bottom:
[000214A0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046]
Prop3=19,2
[5CBF2787-48CF-4208-B90E-EE5E5D420294]
Prop21=31,Testing saving details: Description field.
[B9B4B3FC-2B51-4A42-B5D8-324146AFCF25]
Prop5=31,Testing saving details: Notes Line 1.
The first two lines were already there but I don't know what their relationship might be. E.g.
if the GUID is associated with the following property label it would mean that Prop3=19.2 (whatever it is) was there initially and is still there unchanged.
In any case, I think a workaround is now obvious. Just add those last 4 lines using Notepad, modified by whatever changes in text that you want.

If you failed to fix it, another option is to call Microsoft and walk through the process with a technician. To do this, dial "1-800-936-5700". Explain the error that you received and the steps in the update process during which it was displayed. The technician will be able to walk through the steps from getting a new product key to finishing the installation.
