Can't Use IE8 As The Default Picture Viewer For Online Pics

New computer.
W7-64 IE8
Using IE8 as the default picture viewer
I set my XP to use IE6 as the default pic viewer and didn't have any problems with this
After I got my new computer I set IE8 to be the default viewer.  No problems when I view pics saved on my harddrive or off a flash drive or CD, etc.  But I can't use it to view pics downloaded of the internet.
Like someone emails you a pic attachment.
You click on the pic and a dialog box pops up with 3 options, Open, Save, Cancel.
I can save and then open it fine with IE8.
But clicking Open directly doesn't work.
The dialog box shows the pic is being downloaded
but then the dialog box just disappears and nothing happens
How can I fix this?

The answer to the question of which is safer depends on what type of account you are logged in as.
If you are logged in as an administrator account then either way is going to be the same level of protection.
If you are logged in as a standard
user then turning protected mode off is the better option.
 
The reason protected mode off is a better options in a standard account is because when protected mode is off Internet Explorer runs with the inherent rights of the user account.
If the user account is a standard user then Internet Explorer has
less rights and thus more protected.
Then when Internet Explorer needs administrator rights (to install a program/add-on, for example) you can enter your administrator account’s username and password to authorize the download.
 
For the best security possible without using Protected Mode, use a normal user account with protected mode off and provide the administrator account’s username and password authorization when necessary.
